Reid Highway Upgrade

CLIENT:  MAIN ROADS WA
LOCATION:  BALCATTA, WA
DURATION:  JAN 2015 - MID 2016
CONTRACT VALUE:  65M

Georgiou has delivered the new Reid Highway Upgrade under a design and construct contract, valued at $65 million.

The project, which included works on the Reid Highway/Malaga Drive interchange and widening of Reid Highway between Duffy Road and Marmion Avenue, will significantly improve safety and traffic flow along Reid Highway in Balcatta, Carine and Malaga.

More than 21,200 vehicles a day use Reid Highway west of the freeway towards Marmion Avenue, and more than 30,000 vehicles a day use the highway east of the freeway.

Similarly, safety and efficiency at the intersection of Reid Highway and Malaga Drive has been boosted with two new bridges providing four lanes for Reid Highway traffic to flow uninterrupted over Malaga Drive. This means the 75,000 vehicles using this intersection each weekday will no longer have to wait for several traffic signal changes at peak periods and will experience better traffic flow in the area.

Construction work will commence mid-2015, with works completed by mid-2016.

Fast facts:

  • The Reid Hwy duplication works involve about 2.2km of carriageway duplication (between Erindale Rd and Duffy Rd) south of the existing Reid Hwy
  • It also includes a new loop ramp to allow traffic movements from Reid Hwy westbound to Mitchell Fwy northbound, a new bridge over Mitchell Fwy/railway line and upgrades to local intersections
  • It also includes improvements to the existing shared path over the existing Reid Hwy bridge (including a barrier to separate the path from vehicular traffic)
  • The Reid Hwy widening works involve about 2km of carriageway widening from Duffy Rd to Marmion Ave to provide two through lanes in each direction
  • The Reid Hwy/Malaga Dr Interchange works provides a four-lane freeway standard route on Reid Hwy over a four-lane arterial standard route on Malaga Dr

  • largest gross pollutant trap in Victoria, requiring an 11m deep excavation in rock and continuous dewatering; and
  • disposal of over 30,000T of excavated rock.

The team worked closely with the DEXUS, design consultants and relevant authorities (ie. LOCATION:  BANJUP, WA
DURATION:  OCT 2013 - ONGOING
CONTRACT VALUE:  10M

Georgiou is currently delivering multiple residential stages for Stockland at the Calleya Estate located adjacent to the nearby Cockburn Central Precinct.

Valued at more than $10 million, scope of works includes:

  • cut-to-fill operations with a total volume of more than 60,000m3;
  • cut-to-stockpile with a total volume ofmore than 150,000m3 for the future northern precinct;
  • remediation of uncontrolled fill in southern precinct totally more than 100,000m3 cut, replaced and compacted;
  • cut-to-fill and cut-to-stockpile operations for the Armadale Road and Fraser Road tie-in; and
  • civil works including roadworks, sewer reticulation, stormwater drainage, underground power, retaining walls and water reticulation.

Challenges faced on the project involved an additional 30,000m3 of uncontrolled fill discovered during operations, with several thousand cubic metres of cut-to-fill and cut-to-stockpile scope added during the project. As a consequence, civil stages 1-4 began whilst earthworks operations were undertaken on Armadale Road and surrounding stages. This presented a major challenge of site congestion and plant/personnel interaction.

Georgiou met the challenge by taking measures to exclude heavy plant haulage zones from civil crews and emphasizing the importance of site communication. Georgiou and labour hire personnel performed extremely well in this high-risk situation.

Additionally, the project has pockets of protected species including the Carnaby Black Cockatoo. This is communicated in induction stage so staff are aware of its presence. Additionally, Spider Orchid is located to the north of the project, which is fenced off and demarcated. When complete, this southern precinct will total approximately 465 lots.

  • 30,000m2 of pavement construction including road base, asphalt, and kerbing and associated footpaths.

Continuous forward planning of the works, site reviews and accessible haul routes were undertaken to generate a site material balance; resulting in no import fill or screening requirement in the earthworks required. Additionally, the project team is working closely with the engineer to ensure material balance is achieved over the earthworks and civil works is progressing despite design changes. To date, the best possible program has been achieved with earliest possible title date for the client.
