The journey of the Georgiou Group has travelled many paths over three decades. The first steps of our journey were taken in 1977, when Peter Georgiou, with 9 employees, established the civil contracting business: Direct Drainage.
Operating as a subcontractor on stormwater, sewerage and water components, the company flourished and expanded. In 1991, the company gained two new offshoots, by acquiring Roadpave, and creating Geocrete, our pre-cast concrete facility. The two new companies quickly took off, working in synergy with Direct Drainage. In 1996, the trio worked together to create Western Australia’s largest residential estate: Ellenbrook. It was a pivotal moment in Georgiou’s history, with our three companies handling earthworks, sewerage and drainage, road works and retaining walls. The work was of an extraordinary standard, so much so on The Bridges village that the Urban Development Institute named it the best residential development in Australia. The same year, we achieved ISO9002 accreditation, on our first application. The group of companies was working seamlessly together, and inevitably, in 1998 they came together under common systems and a new banner: The Georgiou Group.
The new Group began diversifying, broadening the kinds of projects we took on, and expanding the scale. We developed Haig Park, and Beaumaris. But we were on our way to taking on the largest single civil project that the State Government’s development agency had ever awarded. At Mandurah Ocean Marina, we built over 70,000 square metres of hardstand and pavement, in an environmentally sensitive area next to an established community. The project took off the Case Earth Award for construction excellence, and environmental excellence.
2001 saw the Georgiou Group again awarded for excellence in environmentally sensitive construction, for our extensive drainage works beside the wetlands of Thompson’s Lake, and that was also the year of our first ‘design-and-construct’ contract, for Westrail’s road and bridge project at Abernethy Road.
In 2003, our skills in remediation were recognised with a construction excellence award for the former Metrobus site in East Perth. The same skills were acknowledged for the work we did in creating Subiaco Rise on the old BOC Gases site. 2004 was the year we began to pursue larger, more complex work around Australia, by forming our Major Projects Division. One of the first results of that new push was Australia’s longest tunneling project ever carried out by Victoria’s South East Water: the Packenham-Narre Warren main sewer project at Hallam Valley. It was that same year that we received our environmental certification, and our safety compliance. 2006 was another busy year, with our Major Projects team further consolidating their national reputation with the $25 million upgrade at Port Kembla, constructing a land-backed wharf.
In 2007, we entered the Resources sector, winning the contract for the construction of the second crushing plant at Boddington Gold Mine, and the civil and structural works at the Wesfarmers LNG Plant in Kwinana. Approaching the organisation’s 30th anniversary, 2007 also saw an extensive review of the Georgiou brand, to determine what it is that makes us special to our clients. The review concluded that the Georgiou brand is built on being down-to-earth, understanding, principled, innovative, committed and collaborative. And it became clear that the power of the Georgiou brand, for the clients who know us, and for the ones yet to know us, was reliable excellence.
2008 saw major expansion in the scope of Georgiou Group’s business, with the start of Georgiou Building and the appointment of its General Manager, Frank Dilizia; and the establishment of a Mining Services business unit headed by Tony Lynch which focuses on large mining contracts and the supply of heavy earthmoving equipment to the mining and resources sector. Along with the development of the new business units, there have also been name changes to some of Georgiou’s existing divisions. Major Projects is now called ‘Engineering’ to reflect the type of projects it constructs and the Western Australian (WA) division is now called ‘Infrastructure’ to better reflect the national expansion currently under way with the company’s recently established Brisbane office.
Georgiou has a new look in 2009 - with a different logo to reflect its growing and dynamic business. Starting as a small Western Australian company in 1977, Georgiou is now a national, diversified civil engineering, building, infrastructure, project management and manufacturing business.
The new logo officially launched on 30th March 2009 conveys confidence, passion and boldness. The angles represent dynamism and advancement. The geometric shapes denote precise engineered forms. The softened edges indicate that we continue to have a warm, friendly business culture.
While our image is changing, our commitment to delivering great value, successful projects and being “the best people to work with” remains the same.
