Georgiou will deliver the Stage 1 Greenfield package as part of the CoastalTraX consortium (ACCIONA, Mott MacDonald, Aurecon and local rail subcontractor DT Infrastructure), and the Stage 1 Brownfield package through the Beerwah Coast Connect consortium (Laing O’Rourke and Hatch).
The CoastalTrax consortium will be delivering the Stage 1 Greenfield contract for the new rail line between Beerwah and Caloundra. The project will deliver 19kms of dual-track passenger rail, two new stations at Bells Creek (Aura) and Caloundra, along with approximately 7kms of elevated viaduct designed to minimise impacts to environmentally sensitive areas. Leveraging experience in complex brownfield rail delivery, the Beerwah Coast Connect consortium will form an alliance with the Queensland Government and Queensland Rail, to deliver this critical infrastructure – part of a broader Wave program – ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This project will create lasting benefits for surrounding communities through a combination of innovative and sustainable engineering solutions, genuine care for the environment, support for local people and businesses, and social inclusion.
Gary Georgiou – CEO said, “The work our teams delivered on Hope Island station and Midland station speaks to the experience Georgiou brings to rail. Across the country, we’ve built a reputation on collaborative contracting, aligning ourselves with clients who share our values, and on delivering projects we’re genuinely proud of. Being selected for both Stage 1 packages of The Wave tells us that approach is resonating, and we look forward to continuing that relationship with our Alliance partners, the Queensland Government and Queensland Rail to deliver something truly lasting for Queensland.”
For Georgiou, The Wave represents an opportunity to contribute to a project that will leave a legacy, improving how people move, connect and live across the Sunshine Coast for years to come.
Sean Donald – General Manager QLD said, “Getting here took a lot of hard work from a lot of dedicated people. These are people with the expertise, the drive, and the experience to know how to get hard things done, and that doesn’t happen by accident. We’re ready to deliver and I know we’ll leave something behind that Queensland will be proud of for generations to come.”
Early design and preconstruction activities are now underway, with major construction expected to commence in 2027.
About The Wave
The Queensland Government unveiled The Wave project as part of 2032 Delivery Plan which focuses on infrastructure for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games and beyond.
The Australian and Queensland Governments have each committed half the funding to deliver Stage 1. The Sunshine Coast is one of south east Queensland’s fastest-growing regions. It is also the largest urban area in Australia without a direct passenger rail connection to its nearest capital city. A direct rail connection will boost local and regional connectivity, offering a reliable and competitive alternative to driving.
Once operational, The Wave will be the fastest way for Sunshine Coast residents to reach Moreton Bay, Brisbane, and beyond. Rail passengers could save over 45 minutes during peak travel times compared to driving.
The Wave – Stages 1 and 2 will run from the North Coast Line at Beerwah to Birtinya, via Bells Creek (Aura), Caloundra and Aroona.
This service will integrate with an express, sustainable metro-style service, The Wave Stage 3 (Metro) connecting to the Sunshine Coast Airport via Maroochydore CBD.
