Georgiou has been awarded its third contract as part of the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments’ Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) in the aftermath of Severe Tropical Cyclone (STC) Debbie in March 2017.
Georgiou Executive General Manager, Gary Georgiou said the team was excited to begin work on Beechmont Road after the successful delivery of a similar project which was completed in February 2018.
“We recently delivered three major landslip repairs along Lamington National Park Road and our staff have come out the other side with a great experience on slip rectification works,” he said.
“Beechmont Road is our third contract with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) for the NDRRA and we look forward to further fostering our relationship with TMR and the Gold Coast hinterland community.”
Progress to date on key Georgiou NDRRA sites include:
Lamington National Park Road – work to repair three of the most critical sites was completed in February 2018. With the works now complete, the sections of road under give-way traffic control have now reopened.
Gold Coast–Springbrook Road – reconstruction works in progress at 18 critical sites and 35 minor sites within a 10 kilometre closed section.
Beechmont Road – design for repairs to 23 landslip sites is now complete and the contract for reconstruction works was awarded to Georgiou Group in late March 2018. Works on the repairs began in April 2018.
Compared to other natural disasters in recent years, the heavy rainfall totals associated with STC Debbie caused significant landslips as well as road damage, with more than 200 sites requiring geotechnical repairs, some of which were unprecedented in Queensland.
