When we last checked in with the team at Telegraph Road, they had celebrated a successful traffic switch onto the new westbound carriageway on Telegraph Road (between Mustang Street and Denham Street) and the completion of the deck unit installation for the Lemke Road bridge.
Late last month, the team also commenced work on removing the existing roundabout at the Telegraph, Depot and Lemke Roads intersection, with traffic now diverted onto the newly-constructed northbound lanes of the Lemke Road bridge.
“The major milestone shift has opened up the remainder of the Lemke Road which is now under construction and will allow the southern bridge approach works to be completed, and the remainder of the creek realignment to occur,” said Project Manager Matt Christensen.
The opening of the new, 74-metre bridge – which was constructed adjacent to the existing bridge and three metres higher to improve flood immunity – is expected to reduce queuing toward the Telegraph Road intersection.
“The new bridge has taken eight months to build, with more than 3,500m3 of concrete utilised to construct the 138 decking units which form a four-lane bridge.
“The intersection upgrade is the final section of works on the Telegraph Road corridor upgrade project, with the road set to open later this year.
“Removing the roundabout at the intersection of Telegraph, Depot and Lemke Roads will cut traffic congestion in all directions and put a stop to queuing of up to 430 metres during peak periods.”
The project is set for completion in late 2018.
