The project was officially closed at a ribbon-cutting and smoking ceremony attended by State Government Member for Cairns Michael Healy, DTMR Regional Director Sanjay Ram, representatives from Gimuy-Walubarra Yidi traditional owners group, and the project team.

The Bruce Highway – Cairns Southern Access Corridor project involved upgrading 2.6km of the Bruce Highway from four to six lanes and which will deliver long-term improvements to traffic flow, freight delivery and road safety south of Cairns.

The project employed 120 personnel at peak, and engaged more than 150 local suppliers and subcontractors, with the construction totalling 630,000 hours of work.

The upgrade will cater for future growth in the critical corridor which services major freight centres, industrial development and access to the Port of Cairns, the wharf precinct and Cairns CBD.
