The first milestone has been achieved for the $104 million Southport–Burleigh Road upgrade, with a new third lane opening in both directions yesterday (1 November).

Georgiou has completed all major works for the Fremar to Rudd streets section ahead of schedule, with only minor works remaining, allowing motorists to take advantage of the six lanes.

Main Roads and Road Safety Minister the Hon. Mark Bailey said it was impressive to hear works had finished early so road users could move more freely on this section of road.

“Motorists can now experience some of the benefits this upgrade will bring to the Gold Coast, including reducing congestion,” Mr Bailey said.

“The upgrade of this extremely busy arterial road has long been required, and at last we are seeing hard work pay off with the successful delivery of the first of three sections along Southport-Burleigh Road.

“An average of 112 jobs will be created over the life of the Southport–Burleigh Road project.”

The landmark road network upgrades form part of the Gold Coast’s $160.7 million major road network improvements in the lead-up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
